1. What are the hours of the fire department? How do I contact them?

Your fire department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Dial 911 for an emergency. Otherwise contact information is available on the website or by calling 386-402-8125

2. What emergency services does the fire department provide?

The fire department provides fire protection and prevention, firefighting, rescue, as well as advanced life support (ALS) and hazardous materials (Haz Mat) response capabilities to prevent or minimize injury, loss of life, or damage to property and environment. 

3. What assistance/education programs do you provide?

The fire department provides a variety of services/programs including blood pressure checks, CPR and First Aid training, high school job shadowing, disaster preparedness, smoke detector battery replacement, and sporting event coverage. Contact the fire department for scheduling. 

4. Why does the department hold fundraisers?

The firefighters union (Local 2271) is typically involved in fundraising with proceeds benefiting the local community.

6. How do your shifts work? What do you do when you're not on call?

Firefighters work 24 hours on and 48 hours off, which equates to a 56-hour work week. The benefits of this type of schedule are personnel consistency and continuity. 

The majority of time is devoted to ensuring operational readiness. Firefighters work 24 hour shifts and have to be prepared to respond to emergencies at any hour of the day.

8. Why does the fire engine respond when a request is made for an ambulance?

Fire engines are staffed with dual certified firefighter paramedics and are typically able to arrive ahead of the ambulance, thus initiating patient care quicker.

9. Why does the fire engine arrive for a simple inspection?

Much like emergency medical calls, fire engines are also staffed with dual certified firefighters / fire inspectors who are able to assist the Fire Marshall with building inspections. In order to be an effective firefighting force, all personnel are required to stay together so that they can respond to emergencies at any time.
