Fire Chief Shawn VanDemark kicked off last night's City Commission meeting by assigning badges to seven new members of the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department and inviting their families to pin them in a short ceremony.
"We brought these new folks on board and at the very same time got struck with COVID," said VanDemark. "That shouldn't really mean a whole lot other than our tradition of applying a badge, having a family member come and put a badge on the member, was pushed aside because everything went to Zoom. So, the opportunity for us to do this kind of went away for a year-and-a-half."
Two of the members started their careers last April while the other five began closer to the beginning of the cautionary period of COVID-19 last year.
"We appreciate the opportunity for the Commission to recognize them, for the public to recognize them, and for me to be able to share with the family how important they are to us," added VanDemark. "This is as much an opportunity for me to recognize the family that's sacrificing, giving me their family members, to serve the community."
The new members are:
- Firefighter Paramedic Brandon Carroll
- Firefighter Paramedic Chase Pierson
- Firefighter Paramedic Elly Tomei
- Firefighter/EMT Dylan Curtis
- Firefighter/EMT Laura Herrera
- Firefighter/EMT Danielle Morales
- Firefighter/EMT Eric Paciero
