UPDATE (May 17): The contractor, in coordination with the City of New Smyrna Beach Utilities Commission, has completed the preparation work needed to begin replacing the water line on the west side of U.S. 1 on either side of Canal Street. Over the next two weeks, the contractor will be removing the old water pipe. There will be no disruption to any water services for residences and businesses nearby. The contractor also will begin replacing the concrete box culvert that runs parallel to Canal Street west of U.S. 1.

Traffic remains shifted slightly on U.S. 1 so work can occur behind barrier wall. Trucks and other large vehicles are reminded to use caution when turning to and from U.S. 1 at Canal Street. No traffic impacts are expected over the next several weeks.

UPDATE (March 14): Contractor work will begin on Monday, March 18 and require single lane closures on southbound U.S. 1 from Julia St to Smith St.  Lane closures can be expected from 7:30 PM to 7:00 AM Monday through Thursday.  The contractor will shift traffic slightly to the east and set barrier wall to create a work area on the west side of U.S. 1. Once the wall is in place, work will shift to daytime operations and occur behind the barrier wall with no additional lane closures expected.

Project Start: March 2019

Estimated Completion: Summer 2020

Project Description

The Florida Department of Transportation is constructing intersection improvements along U.S. 1 (Dixie Freeway) from south of Smith Street to Julia Street, and on Canal Street from Dimmick Street to Orange Street in New Smyrna Beach, Volusia County. The improvements include resurfacing, widening, curb and gutter, drainage improvements, sidewalk, signalization, lighting, and water and sewer work.

As part of the project, a second left turn lane from northbound U.S. 1 onto westbound Canal Street, and a new right turn lane from southbound U.S. 1 to westbound Canal Street will be created. A new merge lane also will be constructed on westbound Canal Street from U.S. 1 to just east of Dimmick Street, and designated bike lanes will be created along U.S. 1. Additionally, Andrews Street will be converted to a one-way roadway heading eastbound from U.S. 1 to the first driveway.

Impact to Motorists

The project will require nighttime lane closures on U.S. 1 and Canal Street. Motorists also can expect weekend road closures with detours to complete the improvements to the Lytle Avenue ramps, and to construct a new drainage structure on Andrews Street. Road closures and detours to complete the work on Canal Street are limited to weekday nights between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. No detours will be permitted during scheduled City of New Smyrna Beach events that close Canal Street. Electronic message boards will be used to alert drivers of lane closures and detours.

Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety

This work will require sidewalk closures and creation of temporary pedestrian access routes. The FDOT urges all pedestrians and cyclists to use caution around the work zone. Signs will be used to safely guide and direct bicyclists and pedestrians around the work area.
