The City of New Smyrna Beach has launched an initiative to plan for future development to create neighborhoods of enduring quality, livability and character. The goal is to support an attractive and functional mix of living, working, shopping and recreational activities for citizens of all ages. Additionally as part of the adopted Comprehensive Plan, the City will identify and prioritize individual neighborhoods that require neighborhood-level plans and will establish a schedule for completion for the plans.
In 2014, the City formed a Neighborhood Council to provide advisory recommendations on neighborhood issues of concern citywide. On the recommendation of the Neighborhood Council, the City Commission also instructed staff to move forward with preparing neighborhood plans for the Central Beach, Coronado Island and Canal Street/Downtown neighborhoods.
A series of kick-off planning sessions for these three neighborhoods began in early 2015. City staff is working with residents to set goals and prepare neighborhood plans to guide growth over the next 10 years. Plans also will ensure the needs of residents and property owners are understood and planned for by City staff and elected officials.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the planning process. For information on individual neighborhood groups, please click on the links listed on the left side of this page.
