The K-9 Unit is part of the Patrol Division and works to provide support and assistance to other divisions and units. It functions to stop drug trafficking as well as assisting in the arrest and apprehension of criminal suspects, track missing persons, locate evidence and find lost property.
The New Smyrna Beach Police Department Canine Unit consists of two full-service dogs. Each canine is dual-certified in the area of patrol and narcotics detection. Both canines are trained in the areas of obedience, area / building searches, criminal apprehension, article / evidence searches, crowd control, helicopter deployment and handler protection.
The canine unit is called upon to perform special details in the area of narcotic investigations and the serving of high-risk arrest warrants. The canine unit also performs numerous demonstrations for the schools and public, as well as being active in the DARE Program.
